Last weeked I was in the Netherlands for work. On the weekend Cheri and I drove from Eindhoven northward to the nether part of the Netherlands to the home of An Gout. Wife of late President Gout. Sister Gout lives in an old farm house in a quaint little villiage a few kilometeres outside the city of Groningen. She is now 73 years old. We reached her house at about 4:00 pm. She had been out working in the garden before we arrived raking some leaves. She told us that she loves to work in the yard because even if she is tired she feels well if she is outside in the garden. On one wall inside the house she has painted a large family tree. On the trunk of the tree mounted in little circular frames are pictures of President Gout, his first wife, and Sister Gout. Then on each major branch is a picture of one of the children with his or her spouse and pictures of her grandchildren placed outward on the branches. She has 36 grandchildren. Another thing we noticed was that near the window was an array of several orchids all in bloom. We were amazed that orchids could appear to be so healthy in such a cold climate that has so few hours of sunlight in the winter but they all appeared to be very healthy. She says they take a lot of care but they do fine indoors. We walked out into the garden where she took us to the back part of the yard and we looked out at the view over the pastures towards the city of Groningen. It was a beautiful scene of green pastures dotted with horses and barns and houses with tall buildings and and old stone church of Groningen on the horizon. She has a bench in that location looking out over the fields. She says that when she is tired from working in the garden she sits on that bench and takes in the view. We talked about her children, the geneology work which she has done, and old times in Indonesia with President Gout and the family. She wanted me to give her regards to Michael de Jager and to Tim Behrend. As we left she went back into the house and came out with some narcissus bulbs to give us. We will plant then in our flower garden and every time I look at them I will think of Sister Gout living in Groningen and working in her garden. I will place a couple of pictures from the visit on the "Pictures" page of this website.
